First Impressions: Younique Cosmetics

Hey Everyone!

Today’s post is going to be about Younique Cosmetics. A month or so ago I received a collection from a fellow blogger and Younique representative. I received the Cloud Nine Collection which features various makeup products. I have been able to to have some fun and experiment with each product allowing me to get a feel and an impression of how well they work or don’t work.

I have never tried any of their products in the past except for their mascara, which I am sure a lot of you heard about. It’s the 3D Fibre Lash mascara that lengthens your lashes with the use of fibres. I had a bad experiment with this in the past, so I do admit I had a little bit of a bad taste in my mouth when trying this makeup. But, I know one bad experience doesn’t make everything else bad. Also, Younique doesn’t test on animals which is a huge deal for me.

I am going to review each product individually over the next week or two. This is the best way to show off and get the full review of each product. Today, I am going to give you a “first look” of the collection I received.

What I Received

  • Mineral Touch Liquid Foundation (Organza)
  • Mineral Touch Skin Perfecting Concealer (Organza)
  • Moodstruck Opulence Lipstick (Upper Class)
  • MoodStruck Addiction Shadow Palette
  • Moodstruck Precision Brow Liner (Medium)
  • Moodstruck Precision Brow Gel (Medium)
  • 3D Fibre Lash Mascara

First Impressions

Whenever I receive a product, my first impression is the packaging of the makeup. I always feel it’s a representation of a company and how they want their products to come across. That is just my opinion. With that being said, all of the products came in a black sleek package with silver or white writing on the front. From just going through everything, it seems like each product can easily be compared to any high-end brand. I was very excited to try each product, but especially the liquid foundation, as I never used a liquid foundation before.

I am going to leave pictures of all the products and swatches down below. If there is anything you want to have reviewed first, let me know.

The lipstick was a bit darker than I wanted, but it’s still a pretty colour.

This palette is my absolute favourite! I was surprised how pigmentated the shadows were. I have never owned something like this and the shadows look a little similar on my hand, but they are all different. This was one palette that I was excited to play with.

What are your first impressions of the products? I am looking forward to sharing my reviews with you all 🙂

Thank you for reading!

        • To be honest – as someone who has tried higher end shadows from Chanel/MAC/YSL etc as well as lower end brands from companies like BH Cosmetics or drugstore brands..this shadow quality isint worth the price. My all time favorite cruelty free brand for makeup is BH Cosmetics. I have numerous shadow palette’s from BH and the quality is the same if not better and the pricing is 1/4 of what you pay for something like younique. I bought younique makeup to support a young girl I know, but I wouldnt spend that kind of money on their products again. It’s just not worth the price.

          • I agree with you. When it comes down to it, the consumer is going to buy a product that is well known in the makeup world and is inexpensive. Yes, I was sent Younique products to review and I did like some of them and really hated others. However, I can’t see myself purchasing again in the future. I read the other comment you left and it really is insane how much they charge. When it comes down to it, I would rather by a $10 eyeshadow palette that is great and I know I am going to use.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and leaving a comment. It’s always great to see what everyone else thinks 🙂

  1. I also sell Younique ~~ I want to point out that the high prices you’re paying for UD, ABH, MAC, Nars, Lorac, and so on are going to pay the CEO’S salary, and the rents in all the stores. When you purchase from a direct sales professional, you’re supporting an individual as well as a company that treats their direct sellers wonderfully. 🙂 Xoxo

    • I think the price points should be much lower for the product quality. YES its decent quality – but when you can buy an entire shadow palette thats larger in size and the same quality if not better..for 1/4 the price – im going to buy the cheaper product because money doesnt grow on trees. Id love to support the brand with an amazing cause, but if the price is too high its not realistic. I paid $120 for a shadow palette and 3 lipglosses – I wouldnt spend that kind of money on younique again after receiving the product. There arent even brushes included in the palette – for $60 that should be a givein.

      • Different strokes for different folks. That’s why some people shop YSL, others Sephora, and others CVS. If money grew on trees, everyone would buy channel.

  2. I just recently tried the Moodstruck 3D Fiber Lashes and I’m midway through writing a review on it. I thought it was OK but I wasn’t overly impressed. It’s comparable to Roller Lash (I thought). But I wear really voluminous lashes everyday so I feel like my look is not complete without super luscious lashes. I might have an unrealistic expectation of what mascara can do since I really only use it now to hold the curl in my lashes so they stay blended with falsies all day. Also, the fiber had fall out. mmmmmm. All over my face when I put it on and I wasn’t prepared for that so I wound up removing part of my foundation and under eye makeup to repair.

Next time I try it, it would go on before anything else. The other thing that makes me wonder about Younique is there is a lot of commission paid behind the scenes. So, take out the commission and the money the company makes and I wonder if I’m really receiving a drug store quality product at a YSL or NARS price. What do you think? I have only tried the mascara so I can’t compare anything else.

    • With the 3D lashes, I really didn’t like it at the beginning and I’m still not a fan. My eyes are sensitive to begin with so having fibres fall into my eyes and around my face is a big con for me. I love Too Faced’s Better Than Sex mascara and I feel it gives me the same results and maybe even better results than the 3D.

Despite me not liking the mascara, I was a bit hesitant when accepting to review the products. I don’t like their approach to selling their products and it’s not going to make anyone purchase it. I figured since I don’t promote or work for this company that I am able to review these products without being bias and get a good feel for how well these products work. They have the look of being a high end product but I don’t think their prices need to be expensive.

I have used everything and I do like a few of there products and others I could do without. Honestly, most of the products I could easily compare to a drugstore brand. I think Younique could easily be a competitive company but their approach is all wrong.

      • I have felt they were overpriced but that’s likely because of all these commissions they pay. I tried the 3D Moodstruck again today and it’s just not for me. I can’t get the look I want. 😕 I had to take it off and put it back on too because it clumped everywhere.

I think the gel is better alone than with the fibers.

            • That mascara is one of my fave drugstore mascaras! I read your review and loved it. It’s hard to get a good handle of the formula and I personally hate the fibres. I use Better Than Sex and get the same results. It’s not worth the price.

              • Sadly, I can’t either. They aren’t “pretty”. I like to use Rollerlash + Loreal Voluminous or just one or the other. I think Lancome also makes some great mascaras. I have Hypnose Drama, which is very nice but not as voluminous as Better than Sex and also Defincils. Defincils is just an incredible formula. I didn’t put it in my review but I sense all the products are more drug store in quality so they can pay out on their robust comp plan. I don’t mind paying more for a product, if I’m getting it in the product. If I’m paying commission … well, then my product is going to suffer.

    • My totally biased 2 cents, as I provided the products to Kristyn for her review for her blog! 😉 I am a freelance makeup artist, as well as a Younique rep and I find that as they add to our line and improve the formulas of our products I’m no longer reaching for other high-end brands. I used to stock my kit with MAC, Nars, UD, Lorac, etc… but have been replacing it all with Younique as I get to the bottoms of my old products. In fact, I truly love our new Liquid Foundation at least as much as I loved the Hourglass foundation I was using daily. I know the direct sales part of it can be a turn-off, it’s what made me a skeptic at the start, but once people get past that part and give it an honest try they usually enjoy the quality of it. Even as a rep, I was using my Naked palette every day until ours came along! I also was a big Anastasia of Beverly Hills supporter (AMAZING!!) but I can’t tell the difference between our pencils and theirs without looking at the packaging.

The great thing about our company is that while it is direct sales, it’s mission-based. The company was formed to help fund the Younique Foundation, whose mission is to support survivors of childhood sexual abuse and our sales help fund retreats for survivors to attend where they can meet with peers and professionals and be spoiled with makeovers and spa services. It’s pretty amazing!

BUT, I get it! I still use other brands when I either don’t love one of ours or we don’t have it in our range of products.

**When you do your 3D+ mascara, remember that less is more! Except for that final coat of transplanting gel, make sure you seal in your fibers with a generous but not too thick coat of transplanting gel so they stay on your lashes all day. If you’re getting fallout when you apply them initially, try rolling the wand around the rim of the tube as you pull it out to compress the fibers a bit. That should help!**

Whew! Sorry for that long one!

  3. Something about Younique as a brand turns me off… I don’t know. I just feel their marketing tactics are really aggressive. I almost can’t look beyond the pushiness to even take a hard look at their products! It’s like a cult… Amway-ish. Anyhoo. Looking forward to seeing your reviews on the products – it may sway me to actually try something from the brand one of these days, who knows. 😉

    • That is how I feel! I was hesitant trying this brand as I didn’t want to come across as me trying to push their products as well. I figured I would give it a shot and solely focus on their products and ignore how they are advertised. It’s definitely a big reason why people don’t want to buy with them.

  4. So glad you’re loving the cloud 9 collection! There are 2 other palette avail in addition to that one ~~ it is Def similar to UD. Our brow products are very similar to ABH. 🙂 we also have tons of mineral pigments, and they last forever! 🙂

        • There are so many different brands that I am thinking of right now. The brow products can easily be compared to ABH, the packaging and the style are pretty identical. The mascara is a lot like Too Faced’s Better Than Sex and I also find it to be similar to Maybelline’s Lash Sensational. I have noticed the concealer is a lot like Maybelline’s Master conceal both package and quality wise. Another blogger mentioned that the eye shadow palette is comparable to UD’s Naked Basics which I have yet to test, but the pigmentation and quality is amazing.
I hope that helps you out a bit 🙂

          • Oh reeeally? Yes a great help. I am yet to try most of those products you have just listed. I have a few ‘drug store’ products but I mostly buy from the Napoleon Perdis range here in Australia. I absolutely love their products. I love trying all new products too. So, I think I might give it a try!! x
