Yes, that is a Taylor Swift lyric that I used as my title.
….I really don’t like Taylor Swift, but that is whole other topic!
This song came on this morning and it got me thinking back to that one time that I thought I was in love at the prime age of 15. I mean, anyone can fall in love at any age, I am not going to argue with that. But my idea of love was definitely cray cray. Looking back now, my relationship was barely a relationship. It was that title of having someone as a boyfriend.
So, I was 15 and the relationship lasted like 4 months. He was my first boyfriend, my first kiss…I was head over heels for him. I remember him telling me that he loved me and that we would last forever and what not. And of course, I believed it all. What 15 year old wouldn’t?
Of course, like most high school relationships, ours came to an end. I was so heart broken and to this day, I still remember how painful that situation was. There has only been 1 other time that I felt that much pain. Being in high school, it made it so hard to even move on because I saw him every day. We acted like we didn’t exist to each other which sucked because he was really fun to be around.
I was able to move on and get over it when I started hanging around other people and made myself distracted. Your first boyfriend is always the hardest to get over, no matter how old you are.
Years went by and I forgot about him, until I saw him at college and then again, at his work. It is funny to me how we still act like we don’t even know each other. I saw him a few months ago and the awkwardness between us is unbearable. We avoid each other like the plague and really, for no reason. Keep in mind that I am now 23 and it has been a VERY long time since our short-term relationship.
Anyways, I just wanted to say, your first love may not be your true love. You could go on and find the love of your life. You will look back and smile at the memories, but thank god that you were able to find someone better. Your first love will stick with you forever and you will think about them from time to time. Not because you still love them, but they were an important part of your life at one point.
And if you are recently going through a break up with your first love, know that it gets better. The pain slowly goes away, your smile returns and you can get back out there.
What age was your first love?
